Mobile Devices

Why Are Mobile Devices Considered an Internet Safety Issue?

In addition to the computers and laptops found in nearly every home, school, and workplace, it's not unusual to see people toting small devices that are capable of many of the same functions an ordinary computer performs. This means that things like cell phones, PDAs, and iPhones present many of the same risks and challenges as ordinary computer use.

Concerns for Parents

  • Allowing your kids to use mobile devices with Internet access makes it even easier for them to access pornography. A handheld device, with its tiny screen and ability to flip closed or turn off at almost any moment is the exact opposite of the large computer in an open, trafficked area that Internet safety researchers strongly encourage.
  • While dozens of content filters and parental control packages are available for ordinary computers, developers are still working on filters for handheld devices. Chances are, your child's mobile Internet access will be completely unfiltered.
  • In the same vein as the pornography caution above, mobile devices allow kids and teens to become even more dnagerously involved through sexting.

How Can I Keep My Child Safe?

  • If you want to make sure that your child does not have access to pornography and other inappropriate content found online, there are blocks available through most cell phone companies that completely restrict the phone from accessing any of the internet features available on that mobile device. This block allows you as the parent the right to control when or if your child ever has internet access via their mobile device.
