AdBlock - Blocking Unwanted Advertisements in Google Chrome

What is AdBlock?

AdBlock is a simple extension for Google Chrome that blocks many of the advertisements on any site. Many people find it desirable to block advertisements because they often find the ads to be distracting, irrelevant, or offensive.

Not to be confused with the faster AdBlock Plus

Many sites on the internet take advantage of advertising to provide a free service to users. If you appreciate the service they provide, please consider not using a tool like Adblock. It is disrespectful and can cause a real impact in a site's ability to stay afloat.

Adding AdBlock to Google Chrome

To add the AdBlock extension to Google Chrome, follow these steps:

  1. In Google Chrome, go to
  2. Click on the blue "Get Adblock Now" button.
  3. Click "Install" to confirm.

When AdBlock is first installed it will add a button next to the wrench icon in the upper right corner of the browser and you will be asked if you want to block Google's Text Ads or not. You will also be prompted to make a donation to the developer, who has graciously provided the extension on the Honor System that you will pay what you can afford for AdBlock.

Using AdBlock

AdBlock simply works for you—it has its own list of what parts of common webpages contain the ads and blocks them automatically. If something gets blocked that shouldn't, or if something isn't blocked that should be, you can easily change the settings by clicking on the stop sign logo by the wrench and selecting the appropriate menu item. You can also right click on an ad and go to "AdBlock" in the context menu to find options specific to that ad or page.
