What is Android?

Android is the Google operating system for mobile phones and tablets, which directly competes with Apple's iPhone and iPad, and Windows mobile phone. Multiple devices on a variety of networks support this system. It is the world's most widely used smartform platform. Major companies that manufacture Android phones are Samsung, Motorola, LG, and HTC. Android devices are smartphones or tablets and include the features associated with these devices; however, specific features vary from device to device. Common features of Android devices include messaging, phone calling, Internet access, apps, games, cameras, multi-touch, multitasking, and Bluetooth capability.1

Concerns for Parents

The downsides to Android phones are similar to any other smartphone or device with internet access:

  • Children viewing inappropriate material because of Internet access.
  • Sending and receiving inappropriate material.
  • Children downloading app which parents do not deem appropriate.
  • Apps that support microtransactions can potentially run up huge bills if your child buys things repeatedly.
  • Data charges may apply for cell phone plans.

How Can I Keep My Child Safe?

  • Discuss what is and is not appropriate with your children.
  • Talk to your wireless carrier and see if restrictions are available on the capabilities of your child’s phone, including Internet accessibiliy. Make a decision that is appropriate for your family and situation.
  • Have a way to access your child’s phone and let them know you will be checking to make sure their messages are appropriate.
